Principle 9
Thinking Habits
Give an aspiring learner the right 'Habits of Mind'.
Principle
Habits of mind are about how you intellectually engage with problems and new learning.
Key language and behaviours
- Encourage and champion pupils to be guessers, describers, tinkerers, visualisers, conjecturers, pattern sniffers, experimenters and inventors.
- Value collaboration with each other by taking the time to actively listen to what the other is saying.
- Provide emotional support through empathy and constructive challenge.
Questions
- Are pupils encouraged to reflect on, and develop, the different ways of behaving intellectually?
- Do pupils recognise that a great deal of thinking and grappling, which can be hard work, is a good thing and should be expected?
- Are all pupils safe sharing their thinking in the classroom?
